Here Comes The Philippine Presidential Election Again for 2016
I longed to see the Filipino Spirit to spark again. Filipino spirit has weakened somehow and more citizens would rather migrate to a progressive country than to stay and put their hopes to the Philippine Government. And I fear for the next President of the Philippines. The weigh of the Filipino's desperate hopes for peace and prosperity will be on it's shoulder.
Philippines is a democratic country but in one way or another, democracy is exploited and its essence becomes pointless. Powerful people stayed in power, while the mediocre lived neutral and the weak struggled to fight for equality. That’s how I perceive the life cycle in my country.
At my early age, I had witnessed the cruelty of political campaigns in our neighborhood. It was the time of former President Ferdinand Marcus vs. former President Corazon Aquino. Of course I wasn't aware of the actual happenings but I could remember my mother telling me to stay inside the house because outside is a precarious situation. As early as I could remember, when campaigners pasted a poster of “Marcus” in our gate, we crumpled them up as soon as the campaigners departed. But if it’s “Cory's” they pasted, we just leave it at is.
I grew up without much interest with politics even though my relatives on my mother’s side where pretty much into it. My grandfather Atty. Elizalde P. Rodrigazo was a former mayor of our town in Murcia Negros Occidental for several terms, who was then succeeded by my aunt Sheila R. Gela who until now is active in her political career.
I once joined campaigning for my candidates and listening to actual political debates. I also experienced offensive tactics from the opponent and hearing insulting gossips against my relatives. Of course it’s upsetting because I felt differently against their opinion. I just listened and watched them anyway.
I never wanted to get involved with politics. Perhaps because I don’t believe that politics could create a good divergence. I think of it as a lurking malevolence which segregates mankind to unite. Just how many died because of dirty politics? It’s depressing to realize that our neighborhood is now a treacherous place to live by. It creates a dismal view of our society today.
The account of Marcus and Cory surely marked the Philippine history. Ferdinand Marcus is well-known by his martial law and accused to be reliable with the assassination of former Senator Benigno Aquino who left his widow Corazon Aquino to carry on his fight. By these, out came the People’s Power Revolution (EDSA I) which ousted Ferdinand Marcus. Corazon Aquino then seated as the first female President of the Philippines, followed by Gen. Fidel V. Ramos. Then there was Joseph “Erap” Estrada who undergoes impeachment trial which ousted him from presidency, and also caused the rise of EDSA II and EDSA III. He was then followed by his Vice-President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. Then There's Benigno "pinoy" Aquino III who is now the sitting President.
Controversy is transparent in politics since oppositions throw dirty tactics to one another, especially now that election is near approaching. Destroying against each others reputation is just one of the dirty tactics. Using money to draw voters is another dirty tactics and a popular one which I myself had witnessed sometime ago. Flying Voters is also a common tactics to increase the number of votes. A “push poll” is also a dirty campaign tricks which starts to sound like a survey, but ends up planting negative messages in voters’ minds.
Campaigners bring in their candidates like a paragon of political virtue that all you could hear are the goodness in it. Political ads stormed the television channels and radio stations since it’s the fastest and most effective approach in capturing voters’ attention. Internet campaign is very popular now and not to mention political bullying especially in facebook. Campaigners target the largest social networking sites to reach out for voters. Some supporters push too far in net campaigning even when it means ignoring the basic ethic... even when it means lying for a cause. And I'm just concern for the ignorant readers who doesn't know how to prove a legit news against a made-up one.
On debates, there is always a heated exchange of words between the presidential candidates. And there's the promises, the flowering words, and so on... but will their words be put into actions someday? Honestly, I don't know who to vote yet. I can't made up my mind. But one thing surely, I will not vote for Binay. Politicians will never stop for anything. Sometimes I think that it’s just the natural order of things nowadays... but, I hope I'm wrong. God bless all the voters.
